(Birth to 3 Months)

  • 14–17 hours in 24 hours
  • Sleep is spread outβ€”day and night

  • Short cycles: 50–60 minutes
  • May wake briefly between cycles
  • Startle easily (Moro reflex is normal)

  • 8–9 hours total (not in one stretch!)
  • Wake every 2–3 hours to feed

  • 4–6 naps per day
  • Lasting 30 min to 2 hours
  • Nap lengths vary!

  • Tiny tummy = frequent feeds
  • Need comfort & closeness
  • Can’t distinguish day from night yet

  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Grunting, stretching, light noises
  • Needing help falling asleep
  • Sleeping in arms or on a parent (supervised)

  • Follow baby’s cues, not the clock
  • Day = light & gentle stimulation
  • Night = dim, calm, quiet
  • Use skin-to-skin & contact naps when possible

This is called the fourth trimester because your baby is adjusting to being on the outside and not constantly being held and warm.
